For a prospective mobile operator, the interesting question in Qualcomm’s February 21, 2017 X20 announcement is how its spectrum holdings could fit an offering. The company said five-carrier aggregation together with Licensed Assisted Access, or LAA, could enable Gigabit LTE service with as little as 10 MHz of licensed spectrum. The licensed qualifier is essential to that commercial planning question. [x20]
The February 11, 2016 X16 release supplies a useful earlier comparison. Qualcomm described LAA and LTE-U support as reducing required licensed spectrum to 40 MHz or less through a combination involving unlicensed spectrum. That was not a universal 40 MHz minimum. Nor did the newer 10 MHz statement describe the total spectrum needed: unlicensed resources remain part of the X20 proposition. [x16][x20]
A practical operator worksheet should therefore separate licensed holdings from the unlicensed component of a proposed configuration. Ask the technical team to identify the aggregation arrangement behind the offer rather than place the smaller licensed figure alone in a business case. This would expose which inputs the proposal assumes and which remain to be established for the operator’s own network. [x16][x20]
The competitive possibility is an additional configuration to evaluate, not a demonstrated reduction in customer prices or an increase in market share. These releases describe different technical routes for assembling a service; they do not price an operator’s complete offering. Keep a configuration assessment distinct from a commercial forecast so the attractive licensed-spectrum number does useful analytical work without becoming an unsupported prediction of market success.
